Reducing transatlantic flight emissions by fuel-optimised routing

چکیده

Abstract After decades of limited situational awareness for aircraft flying in the mid-North Atlantic, full satellite coverage will soon be available. This opens up possibility altering flight routes to exploit wind field fully. By considering flights between New York and London, from 1 December, 2019 29 February, 2020, it is shown how changes current practice could significantly reduce fuel use and, hence, greenhouse gas emissions. When airspeed altitude are constant, flow rate per unit time constant route with minimum journey uses least fuel. Optimal control theory used find these through fields a global atmospheric re-analysis dataset. The total burn emissions (including CO 2 ) proportional ‘air distance’ (the product time). Minimum-time compared actual flown fields. Results show that tracks have air distances typically several hundred kilometres longer than fuel-optimised routes. Potential distance savings range 0.7% 7.8% when west 16.4% east, depending on which daily used. Thus, substantial reductions consumption possible short term. contrast incremental improvements fuel-efficiency technological advances, high cost, risk take many years implement.

Reducing fuel emissions by optimizing speed on shipping routes

Fuel consumption and emissions on a shipping route are typically a cubic function of speed. Given a shipping route consisting of a sequence of ports with a time window for the start of service, substantial savings can be achieved by optimizing the speed of each leg. This problem is cast as a non-linear continuous program, which can be solved by a non-linear programming solver. We propose an alt...

Transatlantic flight times and climate change

Aircraft do not fly through a vacuum, but through an atmosphere whosemeteorological characteristics are changing because of global warming. The impacts of aviation on climate change have long been recognised, but the impacts of climate change on aviation have only recently begun to emerge. These impacts include intensified turbulence and increased take-off weight restrictions. Here we investiga...

Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows for Reducing Fuel Consumption

Most of the studies on vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW) aim to minimize total travel distance or travel time. This paper presents the VRPTW with a new objective function of minimizing the total fuel consumption. A mathematical model is proposed to formulate this problem. Then, a novel tabu search algorithm with a random variable neighborhood descent procedure (RVND) is given, w...

DTN Routing Optimised by Human Routines: The HURRy Protocol

This paper proposes the HURRy (HUman Routines used for Routing) protocol, which infers and benefits from the social behaviour of nodes in disruptive networking environments. HURRy incorporates the contact duration to the information retrieved from historical encounters among neighbours, so that smarter routing decisions can be made. The specification of HURRy is based on the outcomes of a thoro...
